FITBALLS

Traditionally used in rehabilitation, the fitball (or swiss ball) has found it's way into gymnasiums and work environments, promoted as a way to help increase strength in the core region of our bodies.

Chairs with high seat backs that recline can reduce the amount of work undertaken by our cores, doing the work that our midsections should be doing.  Using a fitball for short periods of time throughout your day can help to re-awaken these muscles, helping to increase core strength and reduce lower back discomfort.

Usage
Much research has been undertaken to evaluate the usage of the fitball in the work environment.  The following guidelines should be observed:

  • If you are unused to using a fitball, take your time to become accustomed to it.  Short periods of time (5 minutes) on the ball and then back onto a normal chair with lumbar support will help you get used to it.
  • If you are using the fitball and you feel yourself slouch, you should move to a normal chair with lumbar support.  This will give your core time to recover from using the ball.
  • Make sure the ball fits you (balls are available in 55cm, 65cm and 75cm heights).  Your knees should be at a 90 degree bend whilst sitting on the ball.
  • Maintain the natural curve of your spine - don't bend forward or backward.
  • Increase your spacial awareness whilst on the ball.  You don't want to roll off it or have it jammed to provide support.
